Its hard to consistently pay the bills doing freelancing. The only times I have seen freelancing work for developers working on a side project is if they live in a very low cost of living area (outside of usa or rural usa). Freelancing also seems to work if you have a very strong network, 10+ years of experience in the industry and the connections to go along with that. These days I recommend my friends thinking of freelancing to strongly consider getting a job with great work-life balance. After the first few months at a full time job you can squeeze in work on your side project and maybe pay a remote part-time dev to help.
